Peter A. Geffen SCLC, SCOPE, South Carolina, 1965-68

This is a picture of Dr. King, my friend Mickey Shur of Detroit (who today is an Orthodox Rabbi Moshe Shur) and myself on the right. We were standing at the back door of his church, the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia in September 1965 on a break from a two-day conference of the civil rights SCOPE (Southern Community Organization and Political Education) Project workers of the SCLC. We were reviewing the work of that summer and planning for the next. Dr. King was standing outside talking with a few of us when Mickey asked a man standing nearby with a Polaroid camera if he would take a picture. Dr. King agreed enthusiastically. He was so appreciative of the young white civil rights workers. Dr. King then signed the photo on the back, “Best wishes and Thanks for your help, Martin Luther King.” This one is a copy with the signature superimposed upon it. It is my most valued and treasured personal possession.
