Rendezvous Review: When she is once again passed over for a promotion, Lydia Lord resigns from her chef job at an upscale restaurant. While waiting for news on whether she'll get the location for opening her restaurant, Lydia volunteers to be a chef at a summer camp for disadvantaged kids. Lydia is having the time of her life because not only is she doing something worthwhile with her time and talent but she's enjoying a summer affair with the sexy former football player, Kennedy Fletcher. Kennedy is no ordinary jock, he left his career while he was on top and used the money to open the camp. He's accomplished everything he set out to do and the only thing missing form his life is a woman to share it with. After getting to know Lydia he knows that she is the woman for him but she is not interested in anything but a summer fling. Ms Alers' character driven novels always promise readers loads of love, laughter, and sensuality. As an added bonus we are treated to a reprint of one of her earlier novels and take my word for it HOME SWEET HOME is even better reading this time around. -- Darlene Kendall (Reviewed 07-01-2005) (Rendezvous, vol 22, number 2)

Library Journal Review: This duet of stories from one of the genre's more popular African American writers include Home Sweet Home (1996) and the new sequel, All My Tomorrows, which beautifully continues the story of the Lord family. Although Lydia Lord, daughter of Quinton, is a successful chef in a trendy restaurant, she heads out on her own with gourmet plans. But a summer camp for disadvantaged children run by sexy former football star Kennedy Fletcher needs a chef, and Lydia is quick to oblige???with surprisingly romantic results. Alers (Hideaway Saga) lives on Long Island, NY. --Kristin Ramsdell (Reviewed August 15, 2005) (Library Journal, vol 130, issue 13, p63)

Hidden agenda

Author: Alers, Rochelle

A desperate Eve Blackwell hires mercenary Matt Sterling to track down her wealthy and vengeful ex-husband, Alejandro Delgado, who has abducted Eve's young son, Chris, and taken him to Mexico

New York: Pinnacle Books, 1997, 285 p.

Rendezvous Review: A mastermind behind fine art and drug smuggling, Alejandro Delgado, a former Mexican diplomat who had been a staunch ally for the U.S,.not only heads the FBI's most wanted list but his ex-wife Eve Blackwell's for kidnapping their son. Harry Blackwell, Eve's uncle has connections. Strong ones. But no one on his list tops Matt Sterling, aka Mateo Arroyo., who as an independent operative is paid generously for his special skills. Sterling takes the assignment offered but is not thrilled with his cover on this mission, which is becoming Eve's husband. This is news to Eve as well. Matt reminds her it's only temporary and would be annulled once the assignment to find her son is completed. But can Matt control himself from Eve's seductive temptations once they go undercover? He finds himself discovering feelings he has never had before in his life. This smoothly seductive story will mesmerize you with its mysterious world of the DEA, FBI, and U.S. Military intelligence. I loved it. The characters are fabulous. Mysteriously complex and extremely passionate. I found it grippingly spellbinding. A gem of a book that is a definite must. Linda Mueller

Library Journal Review: Eve Blackwell will do anything to get her son back from her corrupt and powerful ex-husband, even marry the enigmatic stranger Matthew Sterling (Mateo Sterling de Arroyo), a man who lives on danger and is now playing a deadly game of double deception. The attractive, well-matched protagonists; good sexual tension; sexy love scenes; and a rather exotic Mexican setting will maintain reader interest. Although some of the historical background could have been introduced more subtly, and obscure intrigue elements and too many characters confuse and slow the pace, this story is a nice blend of romance and intrigue. Enhanced by the dual cultural overtones, it should appeal to Alers's (Hideaway, Arabesque: Pinnacle, 1995) fans. Alers plans more romances using her Hideaway characters; she lives on Long Island.

Holiday cheer
By Rochelle Alers, Angela Benson and Shirley Hailstock

Author: Alers, Rochelle

Using Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year's Eve as romantic backdrops, three celebrated romance authors tell the warm and moving stories of three couples who turn the holidays into a time for love. Reissue.

New York: Pinnacle Books, 1995, 318 p.

Library Journal Review: In its second annual holiday collection, Pinnacle's Arabesque line features a trio of upbeat contemporary African American romances, each focusing on a different winter holiday. A successful Washington businesswoman and a stockbroker reclaim the spirit of Christmas and a love they thought they had lost in Shirley Hailstock's "Invitation to Love." A sophisticated ethnic art expert and the head of a Harlem prep school find love in Rochelle Alers's "First Fruits." And a sham engagement between two longtime attorney friends leads to the real thing just in time for New Year's Eve in Angela D. Benson's funny and engaging "Friend and Lover." Sensual, romantic, and modern, these novellas reflect a range of styles and approaches, though they could have been more tightly edited. A unique collection that will appeal to all romance readers.

New York: Pinnacle Books, 1996, 215 p.

Rendezvous Review: Chef Victoria Jones has done it! She's gotten her own townhouse/condo with a complete professional kitchen and is on her way to having a successful catering business. She's finally put behind her failed marriage and dreams of having a dance career. Her new neighbor, artist Quentin Lord, however, seems to put a wrench in her plans. The man is making her want and feel things she's never experienced before. Maybe he is even in love with her. His wonderful family sure is! However, Quintin also wants children. She knew that once he found out she could never give him that, he wouldn't want her anymore than her exhusband had. I loved it. Great plot with characters who are warm and loveable, compassionate and complex. The romane and complications are believable and made my heart go out to Victoria. The food descriptions made my mouth water. Bettie Johnson

Ms. Alers draws the readers into the lives of these memorable, beloved characters as they learn about love, friendship, and forgiveness. No compromise
Rochelle Alers

Author: Alers, Rochelle

When Jolene Walker, the ambitious executive director of The Sanctuary, a program dedicated to helping victimized women, encounters United States Army Captain Michael Kirkland, she succumbs to his tender touch, surrending to passion, but their newfound happiness is threatened by Jolene's mysterious and dangerous new client. Original.

Washington DC: Arabesque, c2002, 379 p.

Booklist Review: The prolific Alers adds to her African American Hideaway Legacy romance series the tale of Michael Kirkland, on leave from the Pentagon, and Jolene Walker, who runs the Sanctuary, an organization that helps women who are victims of domestic violence and substance abuse. Because Jolene’s own marriage had fallen apart when she tried, unsuccessfully, to save her identical twin from the abusive man who was ultimately responsible for her death, she has had no desire for romantic entanglements. Her longtime friend Paige, however, pairs her up, blind-date style, with Michael at a Georgetown party. Although Alers’ detailed descriptions of clothing, food, and furnishings read at times like “lifestyles of the rich and African American,” the larger-than-life personalities of Michael and Jolene are enticing, and the skillful blend of important issues, the suspense involving a potential killer, and Michael’s incredible wealth and illustrious family add up to an entertaining read.
-- Diana Tixier Herald (BookList, 02-15-2002, p1005)

Rendezvous Review: Captain Michael Blanchard Kirkland takes a six month leave from the Pentagon to escape being court-martialed, because he can't take anymore of General Harry Cooper's sexual advances. Michael has made a career out of the military service, and lost contact with most of his civilian friends. But he's promised his best friend, Damon McDonald, he is coming to his mother's surprise birthday party. Since the affair is set up for couples, Damon's sister pairs Michael with Jolene Walker. She lost her escort because of a family emergency. Even before Michael formally meets Jolene, he can't take his eyes off her. Jolene is dedicated to the Sanctuary and the battered women in the program, but Michael has been trained to win and he doesn't intend to lose Jolene. No one knows Jolene has been seeing a young female client privately. But her client's tormentor is a powerful man and, when he finds out about their meetings, he puts out a contract on her life. Ms. Alers' plots are like a kaleidoscope. One rotation of the tub and the reader is off on another exciting journey into the lives of her heartwarming characters. NO COMPROMISE renews our acquaintance with old friends and introduces us to new ones who find love and romance while escaping untold danger. Warm families, strong characters, and a feeling that you belong make Ms. Alers' books among my favorites. Mary Thompson

Library Journal Review: Driven by a need to protect others from the same fate as her twin sister, murdered by an abusive husband, Jolene Walker becomes director of The Sanctuary, an agency that helps addicted, abused women. U.S. Army Captain Michael Blanchard Kirkland, on a six-month leave from the Pentagon to avoid sexual harassment from his general, meets Jolene on a blind date and finds himself immediately attracted to her. But they've both had problems with relationships before. As her romantic life picks up, the rest of Jolene's world falls apart. Someone vandalizes The Sanctuary. An attempt is made on her life. One of her clients is murdered. Alers paints such vivid descriptions that when Jolene becomes the target of a murderer, you almost feel as though someone you know is in great danger. Fans of the romantic suspense of Iris Johansen, Linda Howard, and Catherine Coulter will enjoy this first installment of the "Hideaway Sons and Brothers Trilogy," part of the continuing saga of the "Hideaway Legacy."—Shelley Mosley, Glendale P.L., AZ (Reviewed February 15, 2002) (Library Journal, vol 127, issue 3, p129)

Chris persuades Emily to accompany him and while they are in Mexico they marry. But she insists that when they return home their marriage be kept a secret from everyone, including their close-knit families. Once again Ms. Alers creates an exceptional story featuring a great host of characters from previous books. The storyline intrigues and the passion excites as readers are drawn into this compelling tale of ambition and greed. Darlene Kendall

Renegade

Author: Alers, Rochelle

Working undercover as a drama teacher to expose a high-school drug ring, DEA agent Summer Montgomery, haunted by her tragic past, is distracted by gorgeous musician Gabriel Cole whose tender kisses make her long to reveal her true identity as well as her love. Original.

Washington, D.C.: BET Publications, 2003, 304 p.

Rendezvous Review: It's too dangerous for Summer Montgomery, alias Renegade, to continue to work in the southwest so the agency transfers her to the Boston area. Her new assignment is to gather evidence and learn who is behind the drug trafficking in Weir High School. The wealthy, brilliant musician Gabriel Cole is also participating in a federally sponsored cultural art grant program at Weir. From the moment Gabriel sees Summer he's hooked. Her beauty, intelligence and love of music captivate him. Summer planned to wait until her job was finished before falling in love, but her heart doesn't listen to her head and Gabriel is not going to let her escape. Once the men in his family see the women they want, there is no stopping them. It's hard for Summer to focus on her assignment until one of the students is murdered, and then she becomes the shrewd DEA agent on the trail of her prey. Out of the brilliant mind of Rochelle Alers emerges a dynasty of beautiful, romantic people. RENEGADE's geographical and architectural descriptions are ingenious. Tension is like waiting for an oncoming storm and both internal and external conflict is strong. -- Mary Thompson (Reviewed 06-01-2003)

Original.

New York: Pocket Books, 2003, 320 p.

Booklist Review: Married to one of Washington, D.C.’s, most powerful African American attorneys, mother of two wonderful grown children, and owner of an elegant bridal gift shop, Morgana Johnson-Wells seems to have it all until her mother suddenly passes away and she learns that her husband has been unfaithful. Desperate to escape, Morgana returns to her mother’s home in Salvation, Georgia, where she visits with her kind Uncle Julian and discovers her mother’s journals. (Reviewed August 1, 2003) -- Megan Kalan

Rendezvous Review: Morgana Johnson-Wells' world falls apart the day she learns her mother is dead and that her husband, Franklin, is sleeping with another woman. Her Uncle Julian knows there is something more than her mother's death that is haunting Morgana when he picks her up at the airport, but doesn't press her to learn why. Morgana's marriage is in danger of being shattered and she doubts it's worth saving. When Franklin finally shows up she refuses to listen to his plea for forgiveness. Soon after the funeral he and their children depart, and Morgana discovers her mother's diaries and starts to systematically read them. During this period of deep grief, she meets a young artist and finds the passion of her youth while posing for him. In the pages of her mother diaries, she meets a woman she never knew and learns secrets that could never be told. SECRETS NEVER TOLD is Ms Alers at her best. No wonder she's a best-selling author. Her plot is like being caught in quicksand with no way out. The hero is stripped of his pride and forced to face the fact that everyone is capable of straying from the straight and narrow. Deep dark secrets made me race with time to finish this gem of a story. -- Mary Thompson (Reviewed 08-01-2003)

Summer magic

Author: Alers, Rochelle

Renting a summer house on North Carolina's Marble Island to escape her troubles, Caryn Edwards is shocked to discover that she will be sharing the house with sexy developer Logan Prescott, and as the weeks progress, their mutual dislike for each other turns into unbridled passion

Washington, D.C.: BET Publications, copyright 1999, 252 p.

Publishers Weekly Review: Recently divorced and considering a career change, 28-year-old high school teacher Caryn Edwards eagerly anticipates the solitude of a summer vacation at her friends' North Carolina beachfront home. The peace and quiet Edwards desires is quickly disturbed, however, when 35-year-old architect and urban planner Logan Prescott informs her he will be sharing the house. He's in desperate need of refuge from press attention, having just nixed marriage plans into one of the South's most prominent African-American families. Marble Island proves to be a perfect romantic backdrop as both Edwards and Prescott come to terms with emotional baggage, while struggling to control their undeniable mutual attraction. Using Edwards's journal entries to give insight into her character, Alers (Careless Whispers) makes an against-all-odds relationship believable. The author successfully weaves in commentary on racial issues: for instance, Logan was raised by white parents, and the effects of fine gradations of skin color on social status within the black community plays a role in the narrative. The ending is hardly a surprise, but that detracts little from this satisfying love story. (May)

Very private duty
Rochelle Alers

Author: Alers, Rochelle

New York: Silhouette Books, c2006, 2004, 185 p.

Rendezvous Review: The night she left for med school, Tricia Parker learned that Jeremy Black didn't love her like she did him. Jeremy thought Tricia cheated on him and never got in touch with her. Tricia has returned home to visit her grandfather and is instead nursing a badly beaten Jeremy who received those wounds while working for the DEA. Jeremy's dependency on Tricia gives them both a chance to air out their problems but Tricia's not ready to give her heart again which is why she agrees to a temporary affair with Jeremy. Jeremy has lot to think about—whether he wants to continue his career and how to convince Tricia of how much he loves her. VERY PRIVATE DUTY sizzles with sexual tension and some great characters from previous books. -- Darlene Kendall (Reviewed 10-01-2004)
