Between friends

Author: Kitt, Sandra

Two friends in their late thirties, one Black and one white, fall in love with the same man, forming a triangle of desire and deception

New York: Signet, copyright 1998, 381 p.

Rendezvous Review: Dallas Oliver loses more than her mother at her death. Being the result of an interracial relationship, she loses her identity in the home of her African-American father and step-mother. But she adores her little brother. To make matters worse, Dallas is a misfit in a neighborhood that is just beginning to intergrate. Dallas had never been called a "nigger" until she meets Nicolas Marco when she delivers mail accidentally left at her home. Lillian, his mother, softens the blow by inviting Dallas to come in to share some hot chocolate and biscottis (hard Italian cookies). Dallas' childhood memories are filled with her best friend, Valerie Holland, a fiery tempered red head. Years later, she arrives at the Marco home for her habitual visit with Lillian and finds Nicholas instead. After verbally insulting her, Nicholas attempts to rape Dallas. Thanks to Alex Marco, she leaves with her virginity intact. It is at the funeral of Lillian's husband Dallas renews her friendship with Alex. Valerie is used to getting what she wants and she makes sure Dallas knows she wants Alex. Alex is caught in the middle as Dallas fights to keep peace with Valerie and be true to her heart. I'm confident when I pick up a book by Sandra Kitt, I'm in for a treat. Once more, Ms. Kitt displays her talent in BETWEEN FRIENDS. I love the interplay of the characters. The plot is easy to relate to no matter the race or culture. No one is immune to bigotry. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who loves good reading. Mary Thompson

Library Journal Review: In a stunning opening scene that is so terrifyingly real that it will send shudders through most readers, Kitt sets the tone--and the theme-for her latest mainstream romance. Typical of her recent books (e.g., Significant Others, Onyx, 1996), it explores the issues of interracial friendships and romantic relationships, prejudice, and cultural and personal identity while spinning a good love story in the process. Intense, thoughtful, and sensual, this story of a biracial heroine, an illegitimate hero, and their respective best friends and families raises questions that are important, compelling, and occasionally uncomfortable and offers realistic resolutions that will leave readers both hopeful and satisfied. Kitt is one of the best-known African American romance writers and lives in the New York City area.

Close encounters

Author: Kitt, Sandra

Accidentally wounded in a police bust gone wrong, African American Carol Taggert re-evaluates her views on race and romance when one of the cops present that fateful evening--a white man--begins to show interest in her.

Thorndike, ME: G.K. Hall, copyright 2000, 432 p.

Publishers Weekly Review: A late-night dog-walking jaunt lands heroine Carol Taggert in the cross fire of an undercover drug bust in Kitt's (Family Affairs) latest African-American romance novel. It seems the bullet wound Carol sustains is not from a criminal but from Lt. Lee Grafton's gun. The divorced police officer and Carol immediately connect over a shared artistic sensibility, and he plays guardian to her as she recovers. Their attraction, however, faces a major roadblock. The heroine, after all, is an innocent black woman, and, by all appearances, was recently shot by a white cop. Carol is urged by friends and family to sue, but she does not want to become part of a media circus. Her musings over whether to file a lawsuit will strike readers as endless and her eventual decision seems an odd, unsupported choice. Kitt enlivens the tale with a dangerous felon--who was on the scene the night of Carol's injury and fears being framed for the botched incident--stalking Carol with deadly intentions. The interracial aspect of the love affair is handled very well, and the main characters are a good fit. Still, the novel fails to sustain the energy and interest established early on. Color of love, The

Author: Kitt, Sandra

A talented black artist struggling in a loveless relationship and a streetwise white cop trying to recover from past traumas try to keep their love alive despite many obstacles

New York: Signet Books, 1995, 398 p.

Rendezvous Review: Leah Downey's first encounter with Jason Horn was brief but memorable. A few months later they meet again, only this time he asks her out. Out of curiosity, she accepts. Jason, a cop working with troubled teenage boys, can't explain the instantaneous attraction to Leah despite the many objections from friends and co-workers. The attraction between these two lovers is fraught with danger. For Leah, dating a white cop, threatens to rend apart the fabric of her life. Just as Jason and Leah accept their feelings and decide to ignore those who disapprove, Leah's life is endangered. A near miss with death shows them that nothing is more important than their love for one another. The author breaks new ground with her powerfully moving story of interracial love set against the backdrop of inner-city New York. She delves into every aspect of prejudice on both sides, with a deep understanding of the vagaries of human nature. She takes Leah on a journey of self-discovery after which she emerges a strong woman willing and able to fight for what she wants. I thoroughly enjoyed this warm, passionate, extremely well-written story told with such eloquence. Congratulations, Ms. Kitt, for daring to bring a part of the real world, which is largely ignored, into romance with such style and panache. Darlene Kendall

Family affairs

Author: Kitt, Sandra

Gayla Patton, owner of a Manhattan gallery, finds her life turned upside down by the arrival of David Kinney, a new artist, who as a troubled boy had been taken in by Gayla's mother

New York: Signet, copyright 1999, 360 p.

Booklist Review: Gallery owner Gayla Patton is leery of a new controversial art exhibit that her coworker has arranged for their next opening. And when she discovers that the artist is ex-con David Allen Kinney, aka Dak, she is downright appalled. Dak's is a familiar face: her mother took him under her wing many years ago after the brutal murder of his mother. Gayla never liked nor trusted the streetwise punk, and she is not enthused about his reappearance in her life. Sure enough, his graphic depictions of ghetto life shake up the art community, and he also manages to turn Gayla's world upside down. As she slowly sees her way to giving Dak a second chance, he proves himself to be trustworthy and kind. As Kitt traces the blossoming of their unlikely love, she also delves into the complexities of family life and entertains her readers with unexpected parallel storylines. ((Reviewed May 15, 1999)) -- Deborah Rysso

Publishers Weekly Review: With a successful New York City art gallery, a beautiful young daughter and a dedicated lawyer boyfriend ready to propose, Gayla Patton seems to have it all. But, David Kinney, a controversial new artist with a criminal history he wants to put behind him, is about to force Patton to confront their shared past. He was taken in as a young boy by her parents and spent a memorable summer living with a wealthy white family for whom Patton's mother worked. As the pair initially regress to their negative childhood perceptions and resentment of each other, Kitt (The Color of Love) successfully raises issues of race and class alongside the powerful emotion Kinney elicits in Patton. Kitt provides seamless transitions between the present narrative and flashbacks, giving a sense of unusual depth and sympathy to her widely diverse characters--all the while providing the necessary background for a realistic yet surprising turn of events. Serenade

Author: Kitt, Sandra

Alexandra Morrow vows never to be vulnerable to love again, but musician Parker Harrison strolls back into her life as smoothly as the jazz rhapsodies for which he is known, and reclaims the heart she thought she had closed forever. Original.

New York: Pinnacle Books, 1994, 286 p.

Rendezvous Review: Talented Alexandra Morrow intends to become famous with her incredible voice. At the wedding of friends, she runs into her first love, Parker Harrison, already famous for his music. All of Alexandra's resentment for the way Parker ended their relationship comes out, and this time around she will resist his charms. Parker will not be ignored or forgotten, and he pushes and prods his way into Alexandra's life. He also encourages and bullies until Alexandra is ready for the next step of her career--entertaining audiences at one of the hottest clubs in Washington. Parker wants to give her a taste of what it's like to live in the limelight. When Parker meets Alexandra's family, especially her beautiful, younger sister, all her insecurities resurface, including jealousy, causing her to mistrust Parker and his feelings for her. The hero and heroine complement each other with their musical talent while at the same time the physical awareness and intense emotions between them heighten your enjoyment of this beautifully written tale of self-growth, passion, and love. Excellent! Darlene Kendall

Publishers Weekly Review: Parker Harrison was a restless musical prodigy when he met Alexandra Morrow, a college freshman with dreams of becoming a famous opera singer. Then Parker leaves without a word, the she is distraught. Ten years later, when the two meet again by chance, Parker is an accomplished and renowned musician, dissatisfied with his empty life. Alexandra's singing career has been a struggle, as has her love life--until Parker forces her to question her goals and her heart. Christine, Alexandra's beautiful but self-absorbed younger sister, is an unconvincing obstacle for the two lovers, but Kitt more than makes up for this weakness. This auspicious launch of Pinnacle's new multiethnic Arabesque line features solid African American characters, unlike stereotypical romance figures who substitute lust for any real motivating substance. New York: Signet, 2001, 376 p.

Rendezvous Review: Deanna Lindsay feels her life is complete. She has an important career as the manager of a resource team for a news channel and has a successful boyfriend who understands she's not interested in marriage. The death of Stacy Lowell, a white girl she befriended but had lost track of in previous years, results in major changes in Deanna's life. She is appointed as guardian to Jade, Stacy's biracial daughter, a child she didn't know existed. Added to the complications, she must deal with Patterson Temple, the grandson of the little girl's babysitter, and Marcus, the child's ex-convict father. Balancing time between her job and Jade creates quite a challenge. Deanna also finds herself attracted to Patterson who considers his job as a fireman captain beneath her. Significant others

Author: Kitt, Sandra

An African American Brooklyn woman finds that her light complexion brings her trouble as she falls in love with a Black businessman fighting his own struggle against prejudice

New York: Onyx, 1996, 394 p.

Rendezvous Review: Popular with the kids, guidance counselor, Patricia Gilbert feels a special affinity with Kent Baxter. She knows what it's like to have a lighter skin color and have people treat you differently because of it. She hopes meeting with his father, Morgan, can help eliminate a few of his problems; that is, if he would keep at least one of his appointments. Too concerned to wait, she storms his office and makes him listen. Morgan, too, is disturbed about Kent although it takes Patricia's actions to force him to acknowledge there are problems. Her past experiences with men make Patricia unwilling to enter a relationship with any man. Morgan isn't one to give up, and he slowly woos her to his bed and his heart. They encounter a problem with Kent's crush on Patricia and decide to hide their relationship from him. Ms. Kitt continues to break new ground with her special tales steeped in reality with an emphasis on love, romance, and family. She is one of the rising stars of contemporary romance and with SIGNIFICANT OTHERS she belongs at the top. It literally grips and holds you from the very first with its impressive characters who mesmerize the senses, uniquely original plot, and scintillating sensuality which singes the pages. Darlene Kendall

Publishers Weekly Review: In The Color of Love and Significant Others, Kitt delved into issues of interracial relationships and biracial children with great sensitivity and understanding. And here she does it again. Dallas Oliver's life looks better from the outside than it does from within. After a childhood spent largely in a middle-class neighborhood in Long Island, New York, she's making her way as a writer and has a successful boyfriend. But the boyfriend is excruciatingly self-involved. He's the kind who, having stood her up for five hours, tells her "I guess I was wrong to think you'd understand what it's like for a black man in this business." Dallas's childhood memories are tainted by racism, including an attempted rape by a neighbor. She was saved then by Alex Marco, and it looks like the Italian-American Alex, now an ex-Navy SEAL, is trying to involve himself in her life again. Alex is a strong, capable and caring hero. He's got his own childhood scars and secrets but they never overwhelm his character. Instead, they add emotional richness to a story of two outsiders both of whom are willing to buck convention for the warmth, patience and understanding of real love. (June)

Southern comfort

Author: Kitt, Sandra

When her close friend and surrogate mother passes away, jewelry designer Rachel Givens makes some startling discoveries about the woman she thought she knew when she inherits a house with gorgeous musician Lucas Monroe Scott.

Washington, D.C.: BET/Arabesque Project, 2004, 320 p.

Booklist Review: Jewelry designer Rachel’s mother never seemed interested in her, so, when the family vacationed each summer at Highland Beach, Rachel hung out at her neighbor’s house where Julia, an artist, lavished attention on the love-starved girl. Years later, Julia has died, and Rachel is surprised to find not only that Julia had a son but also that she has left the cottage on the beach to both of them. Saxophone-playing attorney Lucas can’t believe that his mother would leave half of what should rightfully be his to some woman who got far more attention from her than he ever did. But through all the hurt and jealousy, Rachel and Lucas finally manage to see each other for who they really are, and they like what they see. Kitt has skillfully penned a thoughtful and genuinely emotional story about family relations, secrets, healing, and forgiveness. The latest in Kitt’s Sizzling Sands series, it, too, features sorority sister alumni of Howard University.
