“The Devil’s Bridge is an evocative work that will establish itself as another classic of the Caribbean and particularly Antiguan writing. It walks confidently, making its own path somewhere between Jamaica Kincaid and Wilson Harris. Because of its powerful visionary and ego-transcending achievements, this work will be compared to Harris’s Palace of the Peacock and Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John.”

Editor's Note: "The first set of full length essays in the volume continues
the focus on the arts and literature of Antigua and Barbuda initiated by Phillips
and Owen. Edgar Lake opens this section by taking us back into literary time.
Lake's essay is a brilliant analysis of the literary heritage of Antigua/Barbuda.
It opens with Ophra Behn's 1688 novel, "Oroonoko" and winds its way
to Jamaica Kincaid's, "Among Flowers." In between, he not only engages
such authors as Mary Prince, Frieda Cassin, Novelle Richards, Oliver Flax, and
Veronica Evanson-Bernard, but also brings real coherence and imagistic continuity
to the Antigua/Barbuda literary tradition."
