Reviews for this Title:

Booklist Review: This collection of 60 short stories gives a good impression of the author's achievement in this form. Calvin Hernton's introduction places Himes' work in the central context of African American writing and offers an explanation for his currently undervalued reputation as the author of novels and short fiction. With his stories depicting the struggles of black Americans against the pervasive aftereffects of slavery, Himes offers a pointed view of race relations in the U.S. from the 1930s through the late 1970s. Himes' experiences as a restaurant worker, prison inmate, and European exile surface in many of these pieces, and the writer explores the beleaguered humanity of his characters with understanding, wit, and compassion. ((Reviewed May 1, 1991))

Publishers Weekly Review: Racism, poverty and bad luck are the main players in this volume of 60 stories; when a character gets a hold of $10, it's likely to end in disaster and a $20 debt. Himes, who died in 1984, reveals the underbelly of the Afro-American experience (he began to write while in prison for a jewel theft). In the space of two bleak pages, a black man has his feet burned by a white mob, then amputated by a doctor; when the amputee doesn't rise for the National Anthem, he is struck by a white man. Yet Himes counters the carnage with a dry humor and humanity. In "Pork Chop Paradise" an ex-con preacher achieves an apotheosis in the eyes of his flock when he appears to "turn de cobblestones tuh po'k chops." It is, not incidentally, a woman who brings him down. In Himes's stories women frequently--through treachery or love, which in turn inspires crime--cause the ruin of their men. Though Himes ( The Third Generation ) sometimes sketches symbolic fables, more often he's as gritty as a police blotter photo. These stories, written between 1933 and 1979, survive as history, as powerful fiction and, unfortunately, as commentary on the current situation of the Afro-American. (May)

Library Journal Review: Best remembered for his detective novels, including Cotton Comes to Harlem , Himes died in 1984 after a writing career of nearly 50 years. This important collection of 60 provocatively titled stories explores the gamut of African American experiences during the madcap 1930s and war-troubled 1940s; the majority are terse, harrowing accounts of prison existence in all its violence and desperation. Framing these emotionally challeging stories are arch fantasies and senseless murders, and evocations of dangerous streets and kinetic nightclubs. Despite a few overly blunt parables of racial enmity, Himes consistently captures the brutality of disenfranchisement and the scruffy poetry of street talk with subtlety and grace. * Recommended.-- Janet Ingraham, Spar* tanburg Cty. Reviews for this Title:
Publishers Weekly Review: Written in 1937, this was the late African American writer Himes's first novel. Its frank and graphic rendering of taboo topics effectively made it unpublishable at the time, however. The autobiographical narrative clearly pictures Depression-era prison brutality, and its frank and affecting depictions of prison-bound homosexual romantic love were too raw for contemporary audiences and its hybrid style--part pulp-crime novel, part introspective character study--ws also ahead of its time. Over the next 16 years, Himes was forced to revise the book four times, and a very different version was published in 1952 as Cast the First Stone. This edition restores the work to its original form and chronicles the directionless life of Jimmy Monroe, a smart loser born poor, white and rural, who bounces self-destructively through life until sentenced to 20 years in prison for robbery. Himes (who spent seven years in prison) masterfully presents the arbitrary violence (from both inmates and guards), the corruption, the regularity of unlamented death, the uneasy relations of the races and the psychological elongation of prison time ("Each moment was absolute, like a still photograph"). Yet it is the depiction of Monroe's love affairs--their comic absurdity, obsessive intensity and transformative emotional depth--with the manipulative Lively, and finally with the pathological but genuinely loving Rico, that mark the book as both a superior prison novel and a moving fictional record of the perseverance of humanity amidst unrelenting degradation. (Feb.)

Library Journal Review: Himes's inclusion in Norton's "Old School Books" line marks the first hardcover entry in the series. Himes launched his career with this 1937 autobiographical novel, which he wrote after being released from prison. The story follows protagonist Jimmy Monroe as he does time in the pen, and it deals honestly with racism, prison corruption, and homosexuality. This edition restores the text to its original form, reinserting material considered too risque for the 1930s. Probably the most accurate edition of this novel ever released, this would make a good addition for Black History Month.
